Interview with Robert and Michelle Colt
of Acting Success Now
Just recently, I had the privilege of spending some time with acting success coaches Robert and Micheelle Colt in their West Hollywood home. They were gracious with their time and have a wealth of information to share from their many years of experience in the acting industry. One of the highlights of this exclusive interview for ActingCareerStartUp.com is when they talk about how important it is for actors to 'get out of their own way' in order to achieve the what they want.
I hightlight this part of the interview on this page as I feel it is so very important and I agree one hundred percent with what they say! So, if you are struggling to make things happen in your acting career, not able to get or keep an agent, not getting many acting auditions, not many call backs or just plain and simple are not where you want to be in your acting career, then read this part of the Colts' interview and then go and watch the entire interview on video. It's very enlightening!
Tony: You both talked about that your Acting Success Now seminars and coaching help actors get to the next level; do you want to talk about that?
of Acting Success Now: I’ll tell you what you do…we help actors get out of their way. And that opens up the vistas of what is possible of them and that includes the next levels of success. I would say that’s really what we do.
Tony: So in helping actors get out of their way or in helping them to get to a higher level of success how important is goal setting?
of Acting Success Now: Well goal setting…it depends how you are looking at it. I think it’s important to want to know where you want to go and what you want to get to. But many actors will tell you, ‘I had no idea I was going to have this level of success, I cant even tell you how it happened, I am amazed by it!’ Then you have other actors that say, ‘I set this goal and I knew it since I was a kid’. To me though the most important thing, whether the goal was set or not set is- are you out of your way? Because if you are out of your way completely, when I say ‘out of your way’ again I just want to emphasize this- your thoughts aren’t getting in your way, your emotions, your behavior, the way you are in the world, your networking- if you’re not out of your way and here you are pursuing an acting career and you don’t even really need to have any goals about it, you are actually going to move into a higher probability of success. Now, let’s say you are an actor that has goals and those things aren’t in your way, you’re doing great too. But if you have goals and you are in your way…very challenging.
of Acting Success Now:Goals can be very helpful in terms of focusing you but its very important not to be too rigid with them, because like Robert was saying a lot of times it happens in a way or in a direction that you least expect it. So, I think its fine to have goals as a means of focusing but to be very open around it also. John Lennon, ‘life is what is happening when you are busy making other plans’. I have no problem with goals, in fact we bring in a very east-west perspective with this, in the east they would call in Dharma, which means focusing. You know to me acting, its like the yoga of acting success is what I would say we are doing. Here’s what I mean by that- in yoga, the simple meaning of yoga, is training of attention. No matter how many fanciful words they use to talk about yoga it really is the training of one’s attention. It’s called dharma concentration. So an actor does have to concentrate on their craft, concentrate of their aspirations and be focused no doubt about it, no doubt about it. But, I’m emphasizing this a lot, if something internally is in the way of that- that focus and that concentration that’s going to pull them in that direction of course completely- so let’s say their goal was in this direction, if they are being pulled with their focus they will start walking in that direction.
Tony: I understand.
of Acting Success Now: It’s like athletics.
of Acting Success Now: Muhammed Ali.
Tony: As a matter of fact I wrote that quote down too, ‘Champions aren’t made in the gym, champions are made deep inside of them’. I love that.
of Acting Success Now:I do too! Exactly. Now, you know, Mohammed Ali – how many Mohammed Alis have come around? That’s a statement of wisdom coming from a rare athlete. Yet, what is he saying? What’s the point? I look at these as pointers. They come from something deep within themselves. To me, and to Michelle for success from our perspective you first have to go, ready, this way, you have to go way in yourself deep within yourself so you are out of your way on a very deep level. Touching into your core. Then, moving this way, so its kind of like you are splitting the attention, in this way, it’s kind of like a dance, this like this, and you know, Mohammed Ali I think did that naturally.
