Your Acting Reel:
6 Important Characteristics

What is it?

An acting reel is a short 3 minute trailer or promo of all of your best acting work from the past and present. It is part of your acting business and is your commercial and selling tool and shows the casting directors, talent agents and acting industry professionals who will view it, the ability and depth you have as an actor. It's your way to convince the viewers that you are the right person for a certain acting role without actually being there in person.

What kind of material goes on your reel? It is a great way to showcase work you have done in Television Commercials, Student Films, Hosting clips. Independent and short films are all things you can use for your reel. It is adviseable for you to used high-quality film/tv productions, however, you are just starting out then you should use the best material you have and try to have it edited in a professional way. It is not recommended to use home-made movies. In the digital age we live in, it’s a lot easier today for industry professionals to see your work in just a few minutes without calling you in. If they like what they see, they will then ask you for a live audition. Of course that helps you save time too.

It used to be that new actors would be frustrated by the fact that they had no material to put on a reel, because they hadn't had any work an actor. Well, now all that has changed. Today it is possible to make your own reel or have a professional reel created for you by a company that specializes in making reels for actors. So even if you don't have any acting work to showcase, you can have it created especially for you. See 6 of the most important characteristics here below that your acting reel needs to have.

6 Important characteristics of an acting reel

  1. Your reel should look professional. Remember it is your digital and online acting business card. It must look good if you want it to do its job of selling you. Find an affordable video editor to make your reel look as professional as possible.
  2. Your reel should be short and sweet, no more than 3-4 minutes in length.
  3. Your acting reel should have 3 - 5 pieces of your work.
  4. Your best scenes should go first! Don't think of this as a show, where you want to build up to the climax. Casting directors for example see a lot of reels. They're not looking to be entertained, they are looking for a good actor to fill a role and they want to do that as quickly as possible. They might not even view the entire reel, so make sure what they do see is your best --- work --- first!
  5. Make sure that the video is saved in a format that can be easy to download online and for the casting directors to email it to their clients (producers and directors) if they want to.
  6. Don't create an introduction for your reel with information such as your age or where you live, telling something about yourself or have a long musical introduction. The only thing you should see on the screen at the beginning of your reel is your name, your agent (if you have one) and your contact information all in one screen shot. From the time your reel begins, the viewer should start to see your work within the first 5-10 seconds. If your introduction is longer than that, it's too long!

In my Acting Career Quick Start Home-Study Course one of the 24 modules is dedicated to the acting reel We spend an hour on the subject. That module features the representative of a professional company that talks about how they create reels for their client actors from scratch. Remember that your actor reel is just one small piece of the whole actor marketing puzzle. There are many more things to know to ensure you get noticed and to help you not just get an occasional audition or two, but to get regular acting work! That's what the Home-Study Course is all about.

Also, if you want more information on marketing for actors, we have that here too on
