What is an acting scam?

What is an acting scam to you? Read this letter Tony wrote to a young actress and tell us what you think.

A young, aspiring actress in her second year in college wrote to me the other day to ask me why I was making people pay for my Acting Career Quick Start Home-Study Course? She wrote,

“You might as well stop emailing me, because you won’t get a penny from me! This must be a scam. All programs that ask you for money to help you start an acting career must be some sort of an acting scam. You even say in your videos not to trust anyone who makes you pay. You said that is a way to know if it is a scam or not! So why are you charging people for this?”

After counting to…20, I wrote my answer to her. See it here below.

Let's talk about this if you don't mind.
First of all, thank you for your question. If you have this question, maybe others do too. You have given me an opportunity to clarify something very important.

What constitutes an acting scam?

First of all, I think I need to clarify something. If you go back to the second and third videos on this page, you will see that your interpretation of what I said was not correct. I said to watch out for "certain people" who ask you for money up front and I specify who they are. I did not say that all people who ask you for money are scam artists.

So why do you feel that all programs that request money are scams?
Do you really honestly think that you will start your acting career without spending any money at all? Without paying anyone anything at all? Do you really believe that?

  • Do you know how much your acting career will cost you? One of the emails I sent to you outlines that very clearly. But if you didn't get it yet, here's a hint.
  • Do you think that acting classes are scams? If you don’t pay, you can’t take a class. You need money for that.
  • Do you think headshot photographers are a scam?
  • Do you think that acting coaches are scams?
  • Do you think that acting career coaches and mentors are scams?
  • Do you think it’s a scam when you buy a book that teaches you about some aspect of your acting career?
  • Do you think workshops and seminars for actors are scams?

All those request money. All of them. And with some of them, you will be hard-pressed to think that you can start an acting career without them.

Each one of them would be considered an acting scam if they tell you they will do what they say and then take your money and don't give you what you ask for or had expected to get, especially if they do it on purpose.

  • Do you think that agents who request money for you to represent them is an acting scam?
  • Do you think that people who tell you that they will make you a star and introduce you to the best casting directors and agents and directors if you just pay them a small (or large) fee up front is an acting scam?

If you answered yes to these last two questions, you would be right.

But would you like to know who some of the biggest scam artists are in my opinion? I'll tell you, but you better get ready, because you might not like what you are about to read.

Here's an acting scam of another type.

They are people who want to become actors, who somehow get up in front of an agent, who is expecting them to be able to act and they can't. They don't know how. Do you know why they don't know how? Because someone told them they didn't need to take any classes, that they don’t need to prepare, that they don't need to learn the craft, that they don't need to study. They believe that it’s not what you know, but who you know and that that is all that counts. They believe that they don’t have to put in the hard work over months and sometimes years to make their dream come true.

So what makes that an acting scam? Because the agent spent his or her time to see that so-called "actor" expecting them to give them some value that they weren't able to give, because they thought that the most important thing was to get up in front of that agent and that the rest would take care of itself.

The agent expects the people they call in and dedicate their time to to be able to act. The agent is excited to see new talent, because if they find new talent, that new talent (or should I say talented actors) will have a good chance to book jobs when they send them out on auditions and thus they can make money off of that talent. If on the other hand the person who comes in to see them is not a good actor and who is just looking for a freebie or a shot at the "big time", in other words someone who will just give them a chance, the agent is disappointed and maybe even upset, because that person, who called himself an actor made them waste time and gave them false hope! They simply wasted the agent's time.

The same thing happens when the so-called actor submits for an acting job online and gets called in for an audition and then they freeze up, because they haven't been trained, neither in a good acting technique nor in audition technique. What's worse, they don't even know the difference. The result is that they wasted the casting director's time. That's a scam! That happens more often than you might think. Just ask casting directors. They'll tell you.

So the funny thing is, that some of the same people who are afraid of being scammed are the very same people who are the first to scam others, but they don't even realize that is what they are doing.

So having said all that, what do you think makes this Home-Study Course for new actors an acting scam?

Having said all that, I'm just curious to know that why you think that someone

  • who has created a website with hundreds of pages of free information, interviews, articles and videos that you can access at any time,
  • who has demonstrated that he wants to help you by sending you emails with tips and advice once each week for the past five years, who even gives visitors to his website a free ebook with some helpful tips about starting an acting career, who answers his visitors questions,
  • who has put together a program called Acting Career Quick Start Home-Study Course for people who want to take their careers to the next level and that walks them step-by-step through the process of starting an acting career with more than 40 hours of video,
  • who gives you the chance to get into the program by not even paying him directly, but by paying the biggest and most reputable online portal for the sale of digital products in the world that has an impeccable reputation and a no nonsense policy for scams (clickbank),
  • who gives you downloadable materials in the Home-Study Course each week as well,
  • who gives you the first 1.5 hour video for free before you even start the program,
  • who has created 4 bonuses to go along with the program,
  • who has inserted into the program an additional 5 surprise bonuses,
  • who offers to give you your money back within the first thirty days if you don't think the program will help you,
  • who offers to give you 20 minutes of his personal time each month for the six months of the program on a personal one to one skype call to help coach you in addition to what you learn in the course,
  • who offers mp3 audio files of all the videos in the course for you to download,
  • who gives you a free headshot, type and marketing evaluation as part of the course

is a scam?

What is it that makes you think that someone who does all that and even takes 45 minutes to answer your email personally is the creator of an acting scam product?

Please answer me, because I'm really curious to know.

Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately, I never got an answer…

What do you think the reason is that she didn't answer me?

What do you think about what I wrote to her? Was I too hard on her?

Let me know what you think.

Tony
