Another Way To Find An Acting Agent
Interview with Actor Robert Presley Jr.
A good friend of mine, actor Robert Presley Jr., like many of the visitors to ActingCareerStartUp.com is at the beginning of his acting career. He recently went from New York to Los Angeles for an organized actor showcase. The entire trip was organized for him and the other actors in the group. The company that organized the trip, TAM (The Actors Market), helped him through the preparation stage and helped him create a reel with three scenes.
They also guided him through the monologue preparation, organized the trip, the flights, lodging, the meetings with casting directors and agents. They organized everything. When he told me about the experience, I immediately thought that it would be a great experience to share with the visitors of ActingCareerStartUp.com. He is my conversation with Rob.
Anthony Smith: Out of that experience what would you say is the most important thing for a new and aspiring actor to know about this experience as it relates to how to find an acting agent? What would be the most important lesson that you learned from that experience?
Robert Presley Jr.: Preparation.
Anthony Smith: Yeah. So what was it exactly that you went out there to do?
Rob: I went out there to LA to get signed with a talent manager and find an acting agent. I wanted to get signed with a manager with a commercial agent, with a legitimate agent and a print agent. Not necessarily all three but I definitely wanted to get signed with someone who was going to represent me in theatrical for film and television and for commercials. There are people out there, managers, who handle all those so you don’t need an agent. There are agents who handle all, you know, film and television and commercials where you don’t necessarily have to have a manager. But I wanted to be signed with somebody who was going to represent me at least in film and television and commercials. And print was like a, ok that would be good if that happened but that wasn’t necessarily one of my ultimate goals but it would be, you know, if I could get signed with somebody in print and get print work, it’s decent money. It’s decent money to help pay the bills.
Anthony Smith: So when you went out there, first of all, how did that happen? How did you know what to do when you got out? How did you know whom you were going to meet, how to find an acting agent?
Robert Presley Jr.: I had done some research and learned of a couple of programs in New York and Los Angeles that get you in front of talent agents, managers and casting directors. And there’s a company called the Actor’s Market who I worked with who are hired to ultimately get me plugged into a showcase that I went to perform at, but its multiple showcases, this event- they put it together. The Actor’s connection does it, there might be another two or three in New York that do it, but the Actor’s Market is supposed to be the best at it, the best one available – they may not be, but that is the information that I had. They are supposed to be one of the best opportunities.
End of part 1. In part 2 of this interview Robert talks about what he did to get ready to go to the showcase in LA.
