  1. Leonardo DiCaprio

The first one on this list of Hollywood actors is Leonardo DiCaprio, who started his acting career by appearing in commercials and on TV shows in guest roles on ‘Santa Barbara’, ‘Parenthood’ and ‘Roseanne’. His first movie role was in ‘Critters 3’ and shortly after this he played a standout role as Johnny Depp’s mentally handicapped brother in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’.   1. Gael Garcia Bernal

Gael Garcia Bernal is one of Mexico’s biggest movie stars, both of his parents are actors and he started performing when he was only a year old.  He performed in soap operas for much of his teen years and was having a very successful career before he decided to leave Mexico so that he could attend London’s Central School of Speech and Drama. He was 19 years old when he started at this drama school and was the first Mexican to study there. After graduating he worked in both theatre and film including the Oscar nominated ‘Amores Perros’ which was his first big hit that allowed him to cross over into American films like ‘The Science of Sleep’ and most recently ‘Blindness’.

  1. Hugh Jackman

Next in this list of Hollywood actors is Hugh Jackman, who started his performing career in acting, singing and dancing by performing in his high school’s musicals such as ‘My Fair Lady’. He continued his formal training in musical theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (he turned down a role in the popular Australian soap opera ‘Neighbours’ to do so). Sean Penn is number four in this list of Hollywood actors as he first appeared on TV as a child-extra in ‘Little House on the Prairie’ (his father was the director of the episode) but it was his portrayal of Jeff Spicoli in the hit TV show ‘Fast Times at Ridegemont High’ that really launched his career. He has starred in ‘At Close Range’, Woody Allen’s ‘Sweet and Lowdown’, ‘I Am Sam’ and ‘Dead Man Walking’. Johnny Depp started out in music, leaving school to play in various bands until he was introduced to Nicholas Cage who encouraged him to go after a career in acting. Johnny Depp’s first major role was in ’21 Jump Street’, a TV show that made him a teen heartthrob in the late 1980s. However this was not the direction that he wanted to take his career so he then departed from TV and went into film. He has made a career for himself by playing offbeat characters in movies like ‘Edward Scissor Hands’ and ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’.   1. Edward Norton

Ed Norton began acting in summer camps as a child before attending Yale; he graduated with a BA in History, but ignited his love of acting by performing in many university productions during his time there. In the early nineties he moved to New York and began his acting career in Off-Broadway theatre. Shortly after this he broke into film and has since performed in movies such as ‘Primal Fear’, American History X’, ‘Rounders’ and the cult hit ‘Fight Club’. He has been nominated for an Academy Award numerous times.

  1. Daniel Day Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis is an English actor known for his own version of method acting that means he stays in character on and off set for the duration of filming. He is very dedicated to researching his roles and as a result is also known for being an eccentric character actor. He appeared in his first film when he was 14 years old and as a child was involved in the National Youth Theatre before being accepted into the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where he studied for three years. In 1982 he successfully won the role of Colin in the movie ‘Gandhi’ after he asked the director in person if he could have the part (he was initially rejected). Daniel Day Lewis has worked extensively in stage (including the Royal Shakespeare Company) and TV. Most recently however he has performed exclusively in film in projects like ‘My Left Foot’, ‘Gangs of New York’ and ‘There Will Be Blood’.   1. Brad Pitt

You can't have a list of Hollywood actors without talking about Brad Pitt, who grew up singing in his local church choir, participating in school debates and performing in musicals. He continued acting during college (where he majored in journalism) and ended up leaving for Los Angeles to pursue acting professionally when he was only two weeks short of graduating. He started working professionally in television on popular TV shows such as ‘Dallas’ but it was his performance in ‘Thelma and Louise’ that really kicked his career into gear. He has acted alongside some of the biggest starts in Hollywood- Tom Cruise in ‘Interview with the Vampire’, Anthony Hopkins in ‘Legends of the Fall’ and ‘Meet Joe Black’, Morgan Freeman in ‘Seven’ and Ed Norton in ‘Fight Club’.   1. Christian Bale

Christian Bale makes our list of Hollywood actors as his acting career began when he was eight years old and appeared in an ad for fabric softener. His career really began after his co-star in one of his first acting jobs ‘Anastasia: The Mystery Of Anna’ recommended him to Stephen Spielberg. The recommendation paid off because Bale did in fact end up appearing in ‘Empire Of the Sun’. He received a lot of praise for his performance- including an award from the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures but being so young and still in school meant that he also was bullied a lot by his peers. This did not deter him though and he went on to perform in the Disney musical ‘Newsies’ and ‘Little Women’ with Winona Ryder. During his young adulthood in performed in many art house films before raising his profile by appearing in ‘American Psycho’, ‘3:10 to Yuma’ and ‘The Prestige’. Most recently he has received a lot of exposure through his portrayal of Batman in ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘The Dark Knight’.

Will Ferrell is primarily known for his work as a comedic actor, a reputation that began during his seven year stint on Saturday Night Live. Prior to this he developed his comedic skills as a member of the comedy group ‘The Groundlings’ where he showed a strong talent for improvisation. He has appeared in ‘A Night at the Roxbury’ and ‘Zoolander’ as well as memorable performances after he left SNL in ‘Old School’ and ‘Anchorman’.
