Anthony,
Happy New year to you. I really enjoy your e-mails and your website. As someone who has just started the journey of becoming an actor I enjoy your site which is full of wonderful insights and answers to questions I have had, and it's funny but it seems as though every time you update your site, it answers a question I have been struggling with at that point.
Thank you for your website, you have helped me a lot as I know you have helped numerous others.
Have a wonderful 2008 and may you break a leg in everything you do this year as an actor.

This site has taught me a lot that I needed to know without dragging me all over the place.

Former actor, agent and musician Aaron Seals founded casting website NYCastings back in the year 2000. I had a conversation with Aaron in October of 2007 about how actors can best utilize his service.
Tony: Who is NYCastings.com for?
Aaron: We cater to people who are taking the acting business seriously, people who are working currently as well as the strong beginning actor. A strong beginner can really excel on our stie. If they do everything right, it will really help them start getting in the flow of acting work.
Tony: What kinds of projects can one expect to see on your site? And what percentage of all the breakdowns you have on NYCastings.com are for extra work?
Aaron:For television and feature films, most of the projects that come our way are background, under five roles and stand-ins. That’s just the way the system is. When casting directors need actors for principle roles, they go to talent agents, recommendations and people who have worked and who have a lot of experience. You have to work your way up to those kinds of roles. There’s an enormous amount of importance placed on those.
For indie films, television commercials or print projects of any type for example, we have a lot of principle roles. You don’t need the same level of experience for those types of projects as you do for the legit ones. Ninety percent of all film and television work is background work and small parts.
What’s the best way for an actor to truly get the most out of using NYCastings.com? In other words, what are the secrets to getting acting work from using your site?
Aaron:First of all, make sure all your materials are up to date: Your headshots should look great. Your should be up to date. Also, get something of yourself on video. headshots look great, résumé. Use it religiously! Schedule a time in your day, every day when you actually look at the jobs we have posted each day to see which might be a good match for you and if it is, go ahead and send in your headshot and résumé through the system and how you get a call.
These are the basics. You would think that these things would be logical things to do, but you would be surprised at how many people don’t do them. Some put their headshots in upside down. Their résumés aren’t filled out properly and they think, “Agh! That’s good enough.” Then when the phone doesn’t ring or they don’t get a response to something they submitted themselves for, they look for someone else to blame, when really it’s their own fault for not taking full advantage of the tools we have to offer.
I think one of the most important things is that the actor needs to create an identity for himself. That’s what people do who are good at this business.
Speaking of the business side of acting, we have another great resource which is our business directory. It can be used to learn the names of some of the key players in the industry and learn about the services they offer and contact them.

Hi Tony
I would like to thank you for helping me with the monologue question I asked in October 2007. I went to the auditions for a Drama course and I am happy to say that I have been accepted as a first-year student at the Tshwane University of Technology.
Please keep on sending me those newsletters and let me know where I can find books that will help me in my acting career.
Thank you once more.
Have a blessed day.
Sincerely

Hi, I’m John.
You answered a question for me about two weeks ago about how to write my cover letters…I want you to know your advice was helpful. I got called in for a part as an extra in my first movie! It’s not big, but it’s my first one! Thanks for your help!
