Hi Tony!
Most people don’t even take the time to tell a person how to reach their goal. I want to thank you for everything and for responding to my messages. Sometimes I just test people to see if they really care about my career and you do. You can continue to send me some tips on how I can accomplish my goals, because you inspire me a lot. Thank you for caring.

Start An Acting Career?

Know Exactly What You Want!

"I want to start an acting career Tony, but I don't have a clue where to begin!"

These were the words of a young actor whom I met not long ago while working on the set of a film.

So what's the best way to start an acting career anyway? Any kind of career for that matter? You will need two types of skills. Attitudinal and Technical.

Huh?

Obviously you will need technical skills that have to do with the craft, your acting skills as well as other technical things like headshots, résumé, etc. Attitude is the second thing, that we will talk about in another section of this site and we'll go much more in-depth on that subject. There is another technical part that has to do with how you plan for your success.

The first part of that planning process has to do with knowing yourself. Do you know yourself? I mean really know yourself? Check out my guide to learning how to take full advantage of all your resources to achieve what you want.

Characteristics Of Successful People

Many studies have been done of the characteristics of successful people all around the world and across many different fields and the interesting thing is, they all have certain things in common. According to this theory then, for anyone wanting to start an acting career should be no different.

Successful people very often know exactly what they want. They know first and foremost what they want to achieve in their lives, and consequently, they also know what they ultimately want from their chosen careers.

Why is it so important to first figure out what you want in your life? Because that clarity that gives meaning to your very existence, it is what drives everything else you do. It gives meaning to your decision to become an actor and it fuels the effort you put forth to achieving that goal, especially now in your own personal efforts to start an acting career.

My Personal Decsion

When I made the decision a couple of years ago to leave my corporate job to start an acting career, I thought that acting was main goal. I soon realized that I had a buried desire to really teach, inspire, write and motivate others to achieve their goals. I longed to speak in public around the topics and content that I would create and to conduct a program television program or one on the internet. Acting is a very important part of all that.

That realization gave a whole new meaning to my acting pursuits. I love acting and still continue to study acting, and if I get the chance to land a role on that coveted prime-time series, I would love to have that experience, but that is not my main goal. To start an acting career was not my main goal, but it was necessary for me to achieve what I want. Now I know that and I have funnelled my efforts to doing what I really want.

Do you know what you want your life to be about?
Here are 10 Questions To Help You Figure It Out.

Here are 10 questions that might help you figure it out. One thing though, you must be specific when you answer them.

1. What do you love to do? (Don’t limit to thinking professionally. Think about hobbies, in general just things that you love to do and that make you happy when you do them).

2. What are the things about your work (during the job that helps you make a living) that you really like?

3. What is it that you just naturally do well. In other words, what are you good at?

4. What are the 10 biggest successes of your life to date?

5. Is there a cause around which you are particularly passionate?

6. What are the 10 most important things that life has taught you to date?

7. Are there certain problems that continue to present themselves in your life? (for example: lack of money, debt accumulation, always being late, etc.)

8. When you just let yourself go mentally, what do you daydream about? (i.e. start an acting career, travelling to exotic places, etc.)

9. At the end of your life, how would you like people to remember you? What legacy would you like to leave?

10. What would you do in life, if you knew that you could not fail?

The Benefits Of Taking This Step First

"I want to start an acting career right away! I don't have time for this kind of stuff!"

Abraham Lincoln once said, "If I had three hours to cut down a tree, I would spend the first hour to sharpen the axe."

What many people don’t realize and what they often find a waste of time, is sitting down and taking the time to think about the bigger scope of things and how that alone can make all the difference in the world to working in a more focused way towards achieving what you want in your chosen career. Remember this, everything you do, I repeat, everything you do, comes under the umbrella of what the bigger scope of your life is.

As I said earlier, my wanting to pursue acting is a part of who I am and of what I want to be as a person as well as professionally. It is a valuable instrument I can use to help me achieve my life mission:

"Use my communicative skills to help as many people as possible to improve the quality of their lives."

Answering the questions above, will make all your efforts count for something and start an acting career in the right way. Answering them will save you time and in some cases, money. You will be more focused on what you want and you will be more likely to stay on the path that will get you from A to B in the shortest time possible.
